Initial Planning

Who:  Minimum of 12, maximum of 16 participants.

What:  8-day backcountry canoe trip.

Where:  The Canadian wilderness.  Depart from the Charles L. Summers Canoe Base, Ely MN.

When:  Depart 30 June, 2010 from Colorado Springs, CO.  Return to Colorado Springs 12 July, 2010.

Cost:  $55 per participant per day, plus share of the travel cost from here to there.  We already have made contact with folks that can give us a place to stay along the way.  We will do all we can to minimize the travel cost and maximize the convenience.  All fees must be paid up by 1 March, 2010.  First payment is due now ($165).  Remaining payments will be made December 15, 2009 and February 15, 2010.  If you pay and can’t go, it’s up to you to find someone to take your place.  Payments are not refundable.

Tentative planning schedule:

15 November, 2009 – Organization and Orientation Meeting

10 January, 2009 – Shakedown #1 and Planning/Training Meeting

14 March, 2009 – Shakedown #2 and Planning/Training Meeting

28-30 May, 2009 – Campout for training and merit badge work

13 June, 2009 – Final meeting and Shakedown #3

I’m looking into the documents required for border crossings.   There is a backcountry visa you can apply for and pay for on-line.

PASSPORTS!  Do you really need a United States Passport to get into Canada?  No you do not at the moment.  However, having a passport does speed up your entrance into Canada.  If you are 18 years or older you just need a State issued photo identification card.  If you are not yet 18 you must also have a State issued photo identification card, and the Parental Release Form (found below).

Returning to the United States of America, might be more challenging.  As of June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI.  The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry (this covers entry into the U.S. via canoe also) to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document http://www.dhs.gov/files/crossingborders/travelers.shtm  All participants entering Canada for the 2009 Season SHOULD and Leaders MUST have a U.S. Passport.  Click here to go to the U.S. State Department web site http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

RABC Remote Area Border Crossing (CAN PASS) This application must be completed and submitted to Canadian Immigration with enough time for them to process and return to you.  Northern Tier cannot issue a RABC.  This Permit is ONLY NEEDED for Crews entering Canada from the Charles L. Sommers Wilderness Canoe Base.

Youth Manifest All youth must be entered on this form and submitted to Canadian Immigration prior to arrival.  This form is ONLY NEEDED for Crews entering Canada from the Charles L. Sommers Wilderness Canoe Base.
